Nadia and Carol

Nadia Comaneci was born on December 12, 1961 in Gheorghe Gheorghiu Dej (now Onesti), Romania. Nadia is the Romanian Olympic gymnast, and has the record of being awarded 10/10 marks at an Olympic event. Comaneci was spotted by Bela Karolyi who was later her Romanian gymnastics coach at the time she was six years old. Her first competition was at the junior national championships in 1969 and finished 13th. She took the title in 1970. In her 1972 first international meet in an preolympics junior event for countries in the Communist bloc, she won 3 gold medals. Then in 1973 and 1975, she was named the all-around Junior Champion. When she competed for the first time as a senior, in 1975 she beat the Russian Lyudmila Turishcheva who was a five-time European champion winning four gold medals and one silver. In 1976 she became the first person in the world to use a backwards-double salto to dismount from the parallel bars.
